City League coaches come from all backgrounds - experienced coaches, former college athletes, parents, college students, and high school students. What they all have in common is the ability to connect with young athletes and help them develop a love of sport.

All City League coaches have the option to be paid, including parents. Some choose to volunteer their time and donate it back to City League (we are a 501(c)(3) with a volunteer board), but whether paid or volunteer, all coaches receive training and are held to the same standard.

This is not the typical youth sports experience where volunteer parents are left to figure everything out alone.

City League handles the development so coaches can focus on the kids.

Coaching at City League Is Different

Many youth leagues ask coaches to design practices, manage drills, and run the entire program themselves.

We don’t.

City League runs structured group practices led by our coaching directors, with detailed development plans sent to coaches before every session.

Kids arrive and move through 3–4 development stations each practice, and coaches rotate with their team through each station.

Examples of stations include:

  • Radar gun throwing sessions

  • Fielding and double-play drills

  • Hitting progressions

  • Position-specific skill work

Each station is designed and facilitated by a City League coaching director, so coaches are never left wondering what to do.

Your role is simple:

Connect with your athletes. Encourage them. Help them grow their confidence and love of the game.

For example:

“Great job bringing your arm back on that throw.”
“Nice hustle getting to that ball.”
“I love the way you supported your teammate.”

We call this promotive coaching, and it’s the foundation of how we develop young athletes.

Games and Competition

City League believes competition matters.

We keep score, and older divisions have playoffs and champions.

But we also teach athletes that the scoreboard isn’t the only way to win.

Through our Dog Tag program, players earn recognition for traits like:

  • Elevating teammates

  • Digging deep during challenges

  • Playing with joy and love for the game

These become powerful coaching tools that help kids understand that being a great competitor is bigger than the final score.

Our Coaching Philosophy

Many of our coaches are excellent athletes and competitors themselves.

But at City League we ask every coach to check one idea at the door:

“I’m going to make these kids great at this sport.”

Instead, we focus on something even more powerful:

Helping kids fall in love with the game.

Because when a child loves a sport, they play it everywhere:

  • at recess

  • with their family

  • on vacation

  • with friends in the neighborhood

And nothing develops an athlete faster than that.
