Qualities to Thrive in Sports

Your child just received a 2025 City League Soccer Dog Tag — the first in a special series. They represent the heart of what we believe youth sports are all about.

At City League, we believe there are qualities more valuable than any ball skill a kid can learn. These are qualities that help children grow in sport and in life. We also believe that through these values, true sport development can also happen. That’s why, after each game, coaches will award special dog tags to a few players who most exemplified the six powerful values we want to promote.

How it Works

  • Every player will receive the general “2025 City League Soccer” dog tag this week.

  • After each game, coaches will award dog tags to players who demonstrated one of the six values below.

  • Every player who exemplifies at least one quality during the season will receive the corresponding dog tag (minimum one extra dog tag per athlete).

  • Players who demonstrate multiple different qualities will earn multiple dog tags — one for each value they show.

  • Dog tags will also be awarded for tournament and regular season league champions - winning is a part of the game, but it is only one part and the other dog tags put this into perspective. (Championship dog tags will take the place of trophy’s or medals.)

The Six Values

Each dog tag highlights one of these six values:

  1. Full Speed – Going all-out, all the time. This means giving your full effort whether the game is going well or not — because giving your best is always something to be proud of and something every athlete can control.

  2. The Elevator – Lifting up teammates. Encouraging others when they’re struggling and celebrating them when they succeed helps everyone play better and builds strong bonds. Also helping other athletes grow

  3. Bounce Back – Responding to mistakes with focus, effort, and learning. Every athlete makes mistakes — what matters is how they respond.

  4. The Spark – Bringing a great attitude that lifts the whole team. A player with The Spark brings joy, energy, and positivity — even when the team is losing or things aren’t going their way.

  5. Dig Deep – Showing heart, especially in tough moments. Dig Deep means finding focus, effort, and a positive mindset even when things get hard — the ultimate competitor move.

  6. Love It – Playing with joy, curiosity, and passion. Whether it’s laughing with friends or enjoying the challenge of improvement, kids who Love It bring contagious energy to the field.

For Parents

You can support this program by:

  • Asking your child what quality they’re learning about and what the coach noticed in the game.

  • Encouraging your child to notice and name when a teammate shows one of the six values.

  • Helping your child reflect: “What’s one of these values you want to focus on next game?”

  • Displaying the tags — they can wear it as a necklace or as a ring attached to their backpacks

  • No wearing them while playing. Kids should not wear them during play. If they have them on at a game or practice, we will ask them to remove them and put them with their belongings.

Thank You

Thanks for being part of City League. We’re proud to support your child in learning and practicing the skills that go beyond the scoreboard.

Let’s build strong character through sport — one lesson, one moment, one dog tag at a time.
