CITY LEAGUE BASKETBALL — COACH JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: City League Basketball Coach
(Paid role with option to donate compensation back to the program)

Danny Aronson and Max Valverde, Co-Founders of City League
POSITION SUMMARY
City League Basketball Coaches help create an environment where every child loves basketball as much as they can, in whatever way they can, while developing skills, confidence, joy, and competitor mindset.
Coaches follow City League’s practice plans, game-day structure, and coaching approach, ensuring consistency and positivity for all players. The role focuses on connection, energy, engagement, and building joy, not on technical expertise or chasing wins.

Bring joy, energy, encouragement, and connection to every child.
Execute City League’s structured program with fidelity to maximize high quality, fun, repetition
Model the values and principles that define the City League experience.
Help kids develop basketball skills, confidence, teamwork, and a strong competitor mindset.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. PLAYER EXPERIENCE & CONNECTION
Coaches are responsible for:
Connecting with every player, not just the naturally engaged ones.
Creating a positive, welcoming, and encouraging environment.
Using promotive feedback (positive, specific, meaningful).
Supporting kids through mistakes, frustrations, and learning moments.
Reinforcing competitor mindset traits (Dog Tags)
Never acting in a way driven by your own competitive spirit. Help the kids act in a way driven by theircompetitive spirit.
Maintaining emotional steadiness and presence that supports kids’ confidence and joy.
Energizing players to keep them engaged, until they learn to energize themselves.
2. PRACTICE EXECUTION
Coaches must:
Arrive on time, ready, and prepared to run City League’s station-based practice plans.
Follow the exact structure of the practice (stations, timing, flow).
Bring high energy and clear, upbeat communication to every station.
Demonstrate basic basketball mechanics:
Controlled dribbling
Reasonable shooting form
Proper footwork and positioning
Keep kids moving, engaged, and having fun.
Never replace the City League practice plan with personal drills or changes.
3. GAME-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
Coaches are expected to:
Encourage effort, spacing, communication, and movement without the ball.
Help players get back on defense consistently.
Reinforce hands-up defense.
Encourage players to look for open teammates without telling them where to pass or when to shoot.
Ensure playing time is shared across the team as evenly as reasonably possible.
Reinforce competitor traits throughout the game.
Coach decision-making after the play, not during it.
Focus on fun, development, energy, and connection — not the score.
4. COACH WITH A WHISTLE (GAME-DAY ROLE)
Some coaches will serve in this game-day role.
Responsibilities:
Manage game flow and safety.
Call fouls in accordance with the age-group rules.
Blow the whistle with authority to ensure play stops.
Explain the reason for the call using a quick 5-second demonstration, then restart play immediately.
If a call is missed, briefly explain that this happens and encourage players to focus on the next play.
Keep the pace high and the environment fun and constructive for all participants.
City League provides complete training for this role.
5. PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES
Coaches must:
Follow all City League rules and age-specific modifications.
Support team formation by providing accurate player evaluations.
Communicate with leadership respectfully and promptly.
Maintain a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment for all players.
6. ATTENDANCE & RELIABILITY
Coaches commit to:
Attending every session, unless:
They are contagious
They face a true emergency
They have an unavoidable obligation
Informing leadership as soon as they know if they must miss, so a qualified backup can be arranged.
Attending all required training sessions.
Responding to communications promptly.
7. QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to dribble and demonstrate basic ball-handling.
Ability to shoot with reasonable form and model simple mechanics.
Understanding of basic basketball rules and flow (City League teaches the rest).
High energy, positivity, and a desire to work with kids.
Emotional steadiness and patience.
Willingness to learn, be coached, and follow structured plans.
Reliable, communicative, and committed to creating an extraordinary experience for kids..
